The transformation of the old tobacco factory in Berlin-Schmargendorf into a modern quarter is already at full speed. The result will offer a wide range of well-cut commercial spaces and attractive infrastructure. Over the next few years, we will be creating around 200,000 m² of commercial space for Berlin’s economy – and setting new standards for the work environment of tomorrow.
GoWest is a sustainable commercial location in the form of an urban quarter based on the historic Berlin industrial yards. The utilization concept meets regional and supra-regional demand and complies with the specifications of a future-oriented commercial quarter.
In the yards, space will be created for trade, crafts, manufactories, offices and administration for companies in modern Berlin focus areas such as IT, mobility of the future, biotechnology, laboratories, research and development, start-ups, service providers and a hotel. The quarter will be dominated by commercial use during the day, but GoWest will also be lively and attractive in the evenings and especially on weekends with a wide selection of uses and services.
This will ensure centrally located, publicly accessible areas for cafés and bistros, for small grocery stores and services such as a hairdresser, bicycle store or fitness studio, for workshops, art and culture. The large market square offers plenty of space for a variety of gastronomic services and a weekly market.
Creativity and productivity need a dynamic and urban environment that offers retreat and security on the one hand, and exchange and communication on the other. The users stand in the foreground – the architecture is their backdrop and at best their podium. “
The Red-Brick-Atmosphere
GoWest is the transformation of a traditional commercial site in Berlin-Schmargendorf. The old chimney and the administration building of the former Reemtsma cigarette factory are being preserved and complement the new industrial yards to form a coherent ensemble.
The commercial quarter intentionally echoes the popular red-brick-atmosphere of Berlin’s historic industrial yards:
The new quarter is characterized by varied facades made of brick and light-filled courtyards. The buildings are robust and durable – and their interiors impress with state-of-the-art equipment, flexible office technology concepts and high energy efficiency. The architecture in GoWest creates identity and offers the freedom of a wide range of uses.
